◦ Character name: Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad
◦ Series: Assassin's Creed

◦ Character history: (To be quite honest, this guy does a lot. For a much more comprehensive history, please check out the Assassin's Creed wiki page for him.)

To put it frankly, Altaïr is a jackass turned slightly less of a jackass. Okay, okay, I kid. But really, he's a bit of a jerk. A good guy jerk, but a jerk none the less.

Altaïr was born in Masayf, Syria in 1165 to Assassin parents - a Muslim father and a Christian mother. Altaïr was born into the Order, but did not hate his predetermined life. While his mother died in childbirth, his father was apparently a distant role model to him - mostly due to the way the Assassins lived, which included keeping parents distant from their children, in order to prevent "unnecessary attachments." After his father's death, Altaïr was taken under Al Mualim's wing - the leader of the Assassins - who he grew to look to as more of a father figure than his true father. He threw himself into his training, excelling at it, and rose quickly through the ranks until he became a Master Assassin - the highest rank in the order, besides the leader - at just 24. He also grew a bit famous for his extra sense of sorts - which the other Assassins called it "eagle sight," as it allowed him to see the true intentions of others around him (such as an enemy, a friend, or a target).

Most likely due to his talent and success, Altaïr grew arrogant and cold, rebelling against the tenants of their Creed, often putting himself and others into danger. This culminated into what became a massive turning point for his life. While on a mission to retrieve what was supposedly a "Templar treasure" from a high ranking Templar named Robert de Sable, Altaïr ignored the warnings of Malik Al-Sayf - a sort of rival, and partner on the mission - and charged in without care. Trying to kill Robert without using any manner of stealth or planning, Altaïr instead managed to get thrown out of the building, leaving Malik and his younger brother, Kadar, trapped with the Templars. Instead of trying to find a way in to help them, Altaïr ran, arriving in Masayf to shame, without the treasure. His actions cause not only Malik to lose his arm and for Kadar to be killed, but for the Templars to stage an attack on Masayf, which Altaïr only barely helps stop.

Disgraced and viewed as a traitor to the Creed, Altaïr is supposedly put to death. Instead, Al Mualim spares him, giving him a chance to start over from the beginning and regain his rank of Master Assassin in exchange for killing nine targets. Altaïr readily agrees, and begins to travel around the kingdom to track down and kill the nine men. Each death raises Altaïr slowly through the ranks, and closer to figuring out just why Al Mualim wants each man dead. The dying words of each man puzzle Altaïr, causing him to begin to question his task and the motives of the Templars - and eventually, his own master. With Al Mualim giving only vague answers, or dodging them completely, Altaïr remained mostly confused, trying to put together the pieces himself - and changing along the way. He begins to realize his faults, and starts to regret his arrogance and foolishness. He starts to care more for his brothers, and slowly tries to understand and believe the true meaning of the Creed.

Only after finally reaching Robert de Sable and killing him does Altaïr find out the truth. With his dying breath, Robert reveals that Al Mualim was in fact a secret tenth Templar, who wanted the others dead so he could have control of the Templar treasure alone. Altaïr rushes back, only to find Al Mualim controlling the minds of people of Masayf with the treasure - known as an Apple of Eden. With help from a newly reconciled Malik, Altaïr fights his way to his old Master, confronting him and trying to bring him back to reason. Unfortunately, Al Mualim had grown crazed, seeing the Apple as a way to force others into peace - much like the ultimate Templar goal. Able to fight against the mental sway of the Apple, Altaïr fights him, eventually defeating him.

After convincing the other Assassins of Al Mualim's treachery and assuring them of his suitability to lead them, Altaïr manages to earn the loyalty of the Order as their Mentor. With Malik as his right hand man, he begins to steer them into a new direction, changing rules Al Mualim had in place before - such as allowing affection between parents and children, and the loss of the ring finger to use the hidden blade.

A month after Al Mualim's death, Altaïr gets word of the Templars attempting to flee to Cyprus, and of the supposed Archive hidden there. Following after them, he runs into Maria Thorpe - a woman who had disguised herself as Robert de Sable fought against Altaïr to allow him to escape. Angry at him for ruining her life and her status in the Templar order, she attacks him, only to be brought down by the calmer Altaïr - who subsequently takes her hostage. (Great way to treat your future wife, huh.)

Dragging her along with him as a bargaining chip and a sort of unwilling guide, Altaïr temporarily leaves control of the Order to discover what the Templars are up to on Cyrus. Slowly freeing the island from Templar control, Altaïr defeats the high ranking members that stand in his way, while Maria learns the darker motives of the Templar order. Finally discovering the Templar archive and killing Bouchart - the man who was leading the retreat to Cyprus - Altaïr and Maria escape the collapsing building together.

In 1193, Altaïr and Maria marry in Limassol, Cyprus, eventually leaving to finally return to Masayf and the Assassin Order that Altaïr left behind temporarily. However, Altaïr's history is suddenly cut short, as he finds himself in on an even stranger island…

◦ Character personality: Altaïr, by his nature, is normally a very cold and objective person. Primarily private and somewhat withdrawn, life as an Assasin does not exactly allow him a lot of openness with others. He does not trust people outright easily, but once his trust is won, Altaïr is fiercely protective and loyal. Also a natural leader, he's able to take control of a situation and lead others, while maintaining his own calm and forming plans. He's rather sarcastic and rude at times as well, using his own form of biting wit to snap back at enemies - or sometimes even his friends. (His exchanges with Malik are a good example of the way he'll easily tease or goad friends.)

While he might for the most part be cold and calculated, Altaïr is at his core a very passionate individual. His affection for the people closest to him runs deep - his later years found him inseparable from Maria, and his high amount of trust and faith in Malik. Even though he may be able to control himself to some extent, Altaïr is also quick to anger, especially before he changed his arrogant ways. He will snap back to insults, quickly becoming enraged or insulted if his buttons are pressed too much. If goaded too much - or if the people closest to him are hurt - Altaïr will not hold back any mercy, using his skills or what he has available to him to inflict as much pain as possible. He can also be prone to obsession, with his stubbornness working against him if he finds himself against a wall. This is evident with the way he stares into the Apple of Eden at first, losing track of time and even if he has eaten or cared for himself. Malik manages to help steer him away from it, but he will still fall prey to it if he does not manage to focus himself before hand.

Before the failure at Solomon's Temple against Robert de Sable, Altaïr also was thick with his arrogance - often acting impetuous and demanding, acting on purely self-centered views. He would often jump into things impatiently, ignoring the tenants of the Creed - and the safety of his companions. However, in his mission to regain his rank, he begins to change - finally starting to think not only for himself, but for the others around him. He finally began to listen to the final words of his targets, listening to their justifications for their actions, which helps him begin to understand things for himself.

Altaïr becomes much more calm and wise, starting to perceive the world around him. Reading the Codex - his personal journal of sorts - you can see how he holds a high regard for other people, and the faith that humanity can better itself without the control that the Templars want to enforce upon them. He fully believes in the Creed - staying a blade from the flesh of an innocent, hiding in plain sight, never compromising the brotherhood, and - the core of their beliefs - that nothing is true; everything is permitted. Finally understanding the meaning behind them, he uses it as a way of life, and is much more focused, calm, and driven than before.

Altaïr is also smart and highly dedicated, easily pouring himself into study and a determination to ensure peace for the people around him and the safety of his Brotherhood. Most likely fluent in a handful of languages prevalent within the Holy Land, and highly skilled with a number of weapons and techniques, Altaïr is one of the best in his Order. He is no stranger to change, and is willing to adapt and work with others to protect the people he cares about - as well as helping the innocent people around him.

Really, if you get down to it, Altaïr can be a bit of a jackass. But, he's a smart, clever, and - deep down - caring jackass at the very least.

◦ Journal entry sample: This is not Masayf. Nor the road towards it. I am not sure where I am or why I have found myself in this place. I awoke here, in a strange sort of bed in a very strange room. I have no idea why I have woken here, or why these people have insisted incomprehensible things to me. There are also confusing, bizarre devices here, and blinding, strange lights that seem to function on some sort of strange power. With the loss of my journal, I am trying to write with one strange device now. There are things that they call "keys" that seem to have letters upon them. They say it is called "typing," but it is of no matter to me what it is called, or what this device truly is. The only comfort I can gain from this is a means to put my thoughts to… I am not sure. It is not paper. But it is something. In truth, I can only think of things that the Apple has shown me before, glimpses of a future that is confusing to me. Is that what has brought me here then? Is this the working of the Apple? I wish it would give me answers, to perhaps understand this strange turn of events. Alas, it seems to be just as confused as I, showing me only the same things it has before, and not an explanation to my situation. I only wish I could see Masayf from within it.

◦ 3rd person sample: Altaïr's first thought was that, wherever this place was, the island was certainly humid. His hood felt uncomfortable and sticky against his head, and the gentle weight of his weapons felt a little stronger than usual. Even his time spent on Cyprus did not make his brow sweat this heavily, or make his skin feel slick and oily. But, worrying over the weather was the last thing on his mind.

The strange building behind him and the people within it had offered him few answers or explanations for where he was or why he was here. They only claimed to be doctors and nurses, telling him that he was something called a "fictional character" brought to life somehow. He could not help the scoff at that - him, a man in something like a fairy tale? Preposterous. This place he was in was clearly real, and as he could still feel his heart beat, it seemed foolish to think he was anything but flesh and blood as well. (Besides, he had no idea what a "video game" was, or what on earth that would be.)

Gazing into the Apple proved useless - it did not seem able to offer him any answers, and only hummed warningly at him when he tried to force one. He still not trust it regardless, but in a strange place, full of strange devices and people, the Apple seemed to be the only thing that could offer him an understanding. Perhaps the strange visions of an equally strange future would help him understand his new surroundings, however, as that seemed the closest thing he could find in his search for answers. If only he could see how Maria was on their final stretch towards Masayf, or if Malik and the Order were well. He had to keep his worries stilled as possible however, especially if he was to survive in this strange new world.

Staring down the streets - he supposed they were streets at least, even the streets and buildings looked bizarre and foreign to him - he started his way down, towards wherever it was that the doctors had told him was his new "home." Finding answers could come after his explored his new surroundings. Besides, that building looked like it had a good foothold or two.
